After the 1982 World Cup,
the 4-4-2 system took a firm hold in world football, but it was not flawless. Although defending with four players against two forwards ensured an advantage, sometimes the defense had a "hole" because it was not always clear as to who should mark whom. To compensate for this problem a new 3-5-2 system was created. In the new system, two defenders marked the opposing two forwards, and one defender was free as the "sweeper," or "libero." Two of the five midfielders were placed outside to play the role of both back and a winger. As these positions required running for long distances, the players had to have strong legs and ample stamina. The system was introduced by some European clubs in the mid 1980s, and it was employed by the West German national team in winning many titles. The formation would sometimes shift to a 5-3-2 lineup as both backs moved to positions further downfield during defensive play. |
